Abstract

Antithrombin III (AT. Ill) is a plasma protein with a broad spectrum of anticoagulative activity. It is a heparin cofactor composed of a single chain glycoprotein. It is described as the progressive inhibitor ofthrombin in plasma as it forms an inactive thrombin antithrombin complex between arginine site of AT.Ill and the active serine site of thrombin. It also neutralizes the activated factors VII, IX, X, XI.
Most investigations have suggested that antithrombin III for all I contraceptive pills decreased from it’s base line and it showed larger decline in women using highest oestrogen preparation.
Thromboembolism is the most frequent serious sequela of the cardiovascular system associated with oral contraceptive use.
Recently, the investigations have suggested that the use of combined contraceptive pills is associated with decreased antithrombin III activity and this is associated with an increased incidence of venous thromboembolism and that decreased oestrogen content has decreased but not abolished this increased risk of thrombosis.
This study was carried on fifty healthy females in the child bearing period of weight ranged from 60-90 kg and age ranged from 18-30 years with no history or family history of thrombotic and bleeding tendency and no previous history of use of oral contraceptive pills.
