Abstract

The term abortion designates a pregnancy that has terminated prior to the period of fetal viability. This period is arpitrarity set at 20 complete weeks of gestation. The fetus at this stage weighs nearly 500 gm & its crown to rump length is about 18 cm [Novak and wood ruff 1979].
Recurrent abortion means spontaneous abortion for 2 times or more. It is an exceedingly frustrating and discouraging problem for patients and physicians a like [Harger et al 1983].The frequency of clinically recognized spontaneous abortion in the general population ranges between 18% and 20%, but it is difficult to determine the exact frequency. An estimation of frequency of repeated early pregnancy wastage has been even more difficult to determine. [Rock and Zocur 1983].
Actual prevalence of recurrent miscarriage in all fertile couples of reproductive age is probably 0.5 —1 % [Queenly and Farquharson 1993].
Recurrent spontaneous abortions are classified as primary or secondary. The term primary is applied to women who had 2 or more consecutive spontaneous abortions and no pregnancy continuing beyond 20 the week of gestation while mating with the same partner. Secondary recurrent spontaneous abortion refers to women who have had 2 spontaneous abortions after alive birth or stillbirth while mating with the same partner.
