Abstract

Laparoscopy is an endoscopic procedure that has added new dimension to the ability to diagnose tubal and peritoneal factors of infertility.
Laparoscopy is indicated whenever pelvic pathology is suspected in infertile female or when routine investigations for infertility revealed no abnormalities.
Since 1980s it is the gold standard in infertility evaluation.
This study included 20 patients with primary or secondary infertility attending outpatient clinic at Menoufiya University Hospital. All patients had no detectable abnormalities in HSG, satisfactory semen analyses of their partners and adequate ovulation proved by ultrasound folliculometry and mid lueal serum progesterone for at least 4 cycles under clomiphene citrate treatment, then they underwent laparoscopy as a part of their infertility evaluation.
Laparoscopy was done using Storz laparoscope” in the first half of the cycle. Under general anesthesia. All patients tolerated the procedure well, and there were no complications encountered in this study related to the proceedure.

The study concluded that laparoscopy is an essential final step in infertility workup, it is superior to HSG in detection of tubal and peritoneal factors of infertility and should be considered before assisted reproductive technology.
