Abstract To determine the effectiveness of peritoneal lavage in ant abdominal trauma and compare it with that of clinical iluation and abdominal tap, a prosectiye study was under-teen in 38 patients suspected of having acute abdomen. An erali accuracy of 100 percent was achieved in such patients•peritoneal lavage.Peritoneal lavage consists of the introduction of a dia-lis catheter into the peritoneal cavity through an incision*ral to the umbilicus after local anasthesia has been adm-itrated to the patient. If aspiration through.the cathe-reveals free blood or change in the colour, the test is iidered to be positive and laparotomy is then accomplished.srvise one litre of saline is introduced into the periton-cavity. Smaller amount is utilized in children. The id is then withdrawn and examined grossly using qualita-I colourimenteric method, microscopically including leuk|ic and erythrocytic counts and laboratory for amylase L. A decision concerning the use of laparotomy is made»sis of these findings.Patients with equivocal clinical abdominal findings,i Blained hypotension, altered sensorium due to any cause, iltiple system injuries and spinal injuries after blunt should undergo this procedure |
