Abstract

A review of literature of lumbar disc prolapse was presented. It includes anatomy and hiornechamics of the lumbar spine, pathophysiologv, clinical picture. investigations, and surgical treatment of solitary lumbar diSC prolapse.
Twenty latienls with solitary lumbar disc prolapse were admitted to the neurosurgical division in General Surgical Department, Faculty of Medicine. Menonfiva Unr ersitv. All patients were subjected to thorough clinical examination according to the neurological sheet applied in this study. All patients \ ere subjected to plain X—ray, lumbo—sacral spine and either mvelography CT. scan or MRI of the lumbosacral region. Patients were subjected to surgery. where the morphology of the herniated disc was ‘erifed and noted In the present study, 11 patients were males and 9 wei-e females. The age on admission ranged from 22 years to 59 years, with the mean age of 40.5 years, and the greatest incidence in the fourth decade.
Sciatica was the main symptom encountered in all patients, with an average duration of 1 0.2 months. Back pain was the second common symptom, present in 90% of patients, with an average duration of2l .25 months.
