Abstract Complete rectal prolapse is a distressing condition, not only due to the prolapse itself, but also due to the associated fecal incontinence. Most published work concentrated on correcting the prolapse with little attention given to incontinence, yet this is a humiliating experience for both patients and their supporting relatives. Abdominal procedures, especially rectopexy operations, have the advantage of being followed by a very low recurrence rate, however, its operative mortality and morbidity are usually higher than that of the perineal ones. In addition, 30% of the patients remained incontinent after a successful rectopexy operation. In this study, Shafik’s puborectoplasty was applied in the treatment of complete rectal prolapse, with its results to be evaluated according to : operative mortality, morbidity and improvement of associated defaecation disorder. In addition its results was studied comparatively with that of simple suture rectopexy. |
