Abstract
The standard posterolateral thoracotomy is the incision of choice for the majority of thoracic procedures. This approach results in division of the latissimus dorsi and serratus anterior muscles and paralysis of the caudal portion of the transacted muscle.
Muscle-sparing thoracotomy incisions have received considerable recent attention. There have, however, been few clinical and functional comparisons between these approaches.
So our study aimed to compare between muscle-sparing thoracotomy and the standard posterolateral thoracotomy incision.
Twenty three patients underwent thoracotomy for a variety of intrathoracic procedures were entered in our study-
Twelve patients were subjected to the standard posterolateral thoracotomy while the remaining eleven patients
were subjected to muscle-sparing thoracotomy incisions.
Our study revealed the following:
1-The opening time is longer in muscle-sparing group while the closing time is longer in muscle-cutting group.
2- The operative field size is wider in muscle cutting group.
