Abstract

Abdominal wall hernia is a common feature of decompensated hepatic cirrhosis.however, literatures on elective hernia repair in these patients are limited (Ozden et al., 1998).The exact incidence of incisional hernia has not been well defmed although a number of reports in the literature suggests that the incidence is probably between 2% and 11%. (Thomas et al., 1993).
In cirrhotic patients with incisional hernias, the indications for surgical repair are similar to those of umbilical hernia, However, acute complications such as strangulation and rupture are less frequent in patients with incisional hernia than in patients with umbilical hernia.
In this study we retrospectively reviewed the outcome and results of repair of 15 incisional hernia in 15 patients with liver cirrhosis. Both the inpatient and outpatient medical records of those patients are assessed with a specific attention to history of both the liver disease and incisional hernia, local and general examination, diagnostic work-up (laboratory, imaging, etc.),approaches to the management and outcome of ascites were recorded for each case, severity of liver disease was quantified by Child-Pugh’s classification, operative management of incisional hernia and follow up ahd mortality.
