Abstract In this study we have tried to evaluate the effect of schistosomiasis on the pathological features of chronic viral hepatitis, determine histological pattern of HCV infection in Egyptian patients, and evaluate the degree of hepatocellular proliferation (using AgNOR technique) in relation to various histological and aetiological diagnosis. Liver biopsies of 83 patients with the clinical and laboratory diagnosis of chronic viral hepatitis were included in this study. Of these, 64 were seropositive for anti-HCV alone, 16 were seropositive for both anti-HCV, HBsAg and/or HBcAb, and 3 were seropositive for HBsAg alone. The effect of schistosomiasis on the pathological features of chronic viral hepatitis was observed in (41 cases) in whom schistosomal infection was surely proved or excluded. The specimens were processed routinely and stained by the following methods: haematoxyline-eosin, Pens’ picrosirus red, Gordon and Sweet& method for reticulin, Masson tnichrome, orcein stain (Senba orcein) and periodic acid-Schiff after diastase digestion. Selected cases representable for the different aetiological and histological categories included were stained for nucleolar organizer regions by the one step silver technique, (AgNOR). |
