Abstract
’ The thyroid gland is one of the most important endocrine organs that almost all cells of the body are target sites for its hormones.
The ovary is one of the endocrine glands that play an important role in maintenance of the reproductive activities.
The hypothalamic pituitary thyroid axis and the hypothalamic pituitary-ovarian axis are physiologically related and act together as a unified system.
The aim of this work was to study the effect of experimentally induced hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism on the histology and histochemistry of the adult female ovary.
Materials and methods We used in this experiment 45 adult female albino rats, weighting about 160-180 gms. The rats were isolated from male rats for one month before starting the experiment, vaginal smears were done to be sure for the regularity of their estrous cycle, we chosen 40 rats of regular cycles the rats were classified into three groups:
’ Groupl (control group): This group consists of 10 rats, each rat
was administered 0.5 ml physiologic saline every other day orally by gastric tube for 3 months.
