Abstract

Portal hypertension is the hemodynamic abnormality most frequently associated with serious liver disease, although it is also recognized less commonly in a variety of extrahepatic diseases. Many of the most lethal complications of liver disease are related directly to the presence of portal hypertension.
This study is designed to compare the development of bacterial peritonitis in cirrhotic patients after endoscopic sclerotherapy and band ligation.
The present study included 152 patients who were referred to the endoscopy units of Menoufiya University Hospital. They were 107 males(70.39 %) and 45 females (29.6 %) their ages were ranging from 15 years to 75 years with a mean value of 38.86± 11.23 years. All patients had the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis and esophageal varices.
We studied the occurrence of bacteremia, ascitic fluid infection and other infectious complications occurring in 52 patients after EVL. We compared these results with the results evolving in another 50 patient who underwent EVS.
