Abstract

The diagnosis of urinary tract obstruction is a difficult problem. Pyelocaliectasis is seen not only in obstruction but also in order to conditions such as residual dilatation after releif of obstruction, vesico-ureteral reflux and pyelonephrits.
The standard I.V.U even with diuretic augmentation doses not permit the objective diagnosis or exclusion of urinary tract obstruction. The Whitaker test is invasive an therefore has not gained widespread use. Nowadays diuretic renography, the most widely accepted non-invasive procedure to diagnose obstruction, however, it has the disadvantage of being expensive, using ionizing radiation and having a relativeky high rate of faste-positive and indeterminate (equivocal) results.
In this work we have studied the usefulness of color duplex resistive ibdex measurement in the diagnosis of obstruction and in the differentiation between obstructive and non obstructive hydeonephrosis taking in consideration relating the results to IVU, the stabdard technique to diagnose obstruction in acute phase, to diuretic renogram the most widely accepted diagnostic technique in chronic obstruction, and alsorelating the results to antegrade study in equivocal obstruction.
To achieve these goals, our study included 3 groups of kidneys. First group is the acutely obstructed kidneys (in renal colic). Second group is the chronically obstructed kidneys (Not in renal colic). Third group is the equivocaly obstructed kidneys.
