Abstract

Aluminum of metal matrix composites (MMC’s) reinforced with ceramic particles, such as SiC particles have been applied for light structural materials in aerospace industrial, marine applications, mining and in hydraulic systems for impellers, agitators, turbine blades, pumps, valces, automobile industries and other industries because of their good performance for specific tensile strength, specific stiffness, and good wear resistance. It is expected that the demand for MMC’s will increase in these applications. This requires characterization of the materials under identical test conditions where corrosion assisted erosion becomes the mechanism of material loss.
Yjis sy\tudy concerned to investigate the erosion-corrosion and corrosion characteristics of A1 alloy 6061 and aluminum alloy 6061/SiCp composites with test duration at three speeds of 1400, 2000 and 2700 r.p.m. in two medium: (water + 3 wt% NaCl) and (water +3 wt% NaCl + 40 wt% sand particles) by using the rotating sample method and using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) to investigate the characteristics of the erosion - corrosion of Al alloy 6.61 and aluminum alloy 6.61/SiCp composites.
