Abstract

Our factory for manufacturing water paints was chosen for this study. The 20 workers in the factory were chosen as an exposed group and 20 control subjects were also chosen and interviewed using a specially designed questionnaire on respiratory and skin health disorders and were clinically examined generally and locally for the chest and skin spirometric measurements were done using compact spirometer, patch test, laboratory investigations of CBC for MCV and 24h urine for volume and specific gravity were also done. Measurements of the place environment and analysis of the raw materials used in the factory was also done.
Environmental measurements were lower than that registered as PEL for ammonia, formaldehyde and acylates. In raw materials these substances were also lower than their PEL.
The exposed and control groups were not significantly different regarding the mean age, weight, height, residence, material state, education and smoking habit. On the other hand respiratory manifestations in grouping and rhinorrhea were significantly increased among exposed group, while MEF% significantly decreased among their.
There was a synergistic effect between smoking and exposure to water based paints as the respiratory manifestations and spirometric measurements (where rhinorrhea, cough, expectoration and dyspnea significantly increased and MEF%) were significantly decreased among exposed smokers.
