Abstract

Thalassemia syndromes are due to inherited defects of globin chain synthesis. Thalassemia is among the most common genetic disorders affecting great proportion of children worldwide, and the clinical syndromes are divided into ? and ?-thalassemias.
General problems are arisen and evoked from thalassemia, especially ? thalassemia consequently affect children’s health and their life. If thalassemic children haven’t proper management or don’t comply with management plan, death occurs no later than the third decade. Furthermore, many complications develop as generalized osteoporosis, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, endocrine disorders and other complications that result from iron deposits in other tissues due to repeated blood, transfusions.
The range of nursing interventions employed with families and thalassemic children has been explored, stressing the importance of a clear understanding of the illness and its effect on each child and his/her family. Also, building up holistic therapeutic relationships to support children and families, encouraging compliance to treatment regimen and explaining the effects of non compliance on the child’s health conditions are essential components of good nursing care.
