Abstract

The aim of the thesis is to develop an interactive teaching website that will complement traditional methods of teaching public health through a selection of two different technologies, with the goal of reaching a conclusion concerning their individual advantages and disadvantages, as well as how best to use them.
The end product is to be used by online registered students, who are interested in the domain of Public Health, namely Biostatistics and Epidemiology specialties. It is also designed for non-public health background users. Therefore, it is important that the system is easy to use and administer.
The most common and widely used tools for designing and implementing web-based courses are reviewed; along with a description of the final technologies chosen, and the reason for their choice.
Two technology systems are used in the CME website. One of them is based on Dreamweaver MX connected to a couple of two different relational database management system through Active Server Pages (ASP) technology (one of them is presented by Access database used to design a communicable disease database and the other represents a student registration database with an examination system designed by Oracle database). The other technology is traditional based on PowerPoint presentations published on the Web. The description of the most important implementation methods is also presented.
Suggestions are made for future development and improvement of the two systems.
