Abstract Intercostal nerve block provides analgesia of the chest or abdominal wall for patients with surgical incisions, rib fractures, chest tubes, thoracic herpes zoster, and rib lesions. The aim of this work was to study the effect of intercostal nerve block compared to analgesia on respiratory muscle function, as detected by pulmonary function testing and pain scoring system We conducted a prospective, randomized study of fifty consecutive patients admitted to the unit of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in Minoufiya University Hospitals between December 2001 and July 2002. all patients were complaining of multiple fracture ribs. Twenty five patients were given diclofenac sodium, which is a non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug, 75 mg. intra-muscular every twelve hours (Group A). The other twenty five patients were subjected to intercostal nerve block with 0.5% bupivacaine (Marcaine) on arrival and was repeated after twelve hours (Group B) |
