Abstract

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a catastrophic condition that, depending on its severity, may cause dramatic changes in the victim’s life. The SCI occurs when the spinal column or the spinal cord is damaged as a result of trauma, disease processes or congenital defect. The aim of this study was to assess the performance of the nursing staff toward patients with SCI in emergency management. A sample of convenience 60 nurses was selected, (30) from the Neurosurgery ICU in El-Demerdash Hospital, and (30) from ASU Specialized Hospital ICU (A&B). Data were collected utilizing three designed tools; an Arabic questionnaire sheet which include; sociodemographic characteristic data about the nurse, basic knowledge about the disease and nursing role based on emergency care needed for injured patients at emergency situation; an observational checklist which includes the main observations related to primary assessment, CPR, immediate nursing care and secondary assessment with nursing intervention after stabilization ;and Likert Scale to explore the nurses’ attitude toward the injured patients. Results of the study answered the research questions which showed that, nearly three quarters of the total nurses under the study had satisfactory knowledge and half of them satisfactory practical level about dealing for patient with SCI. Meanwhile, the study showed that all nurses have positive attitude toward patients with SCI at an emergency situation. Recommendations: an in-service educational program for concerning the essential emergency management needed for SCI patients, and a related protocol should be available for staff nurses. In additional to motivation and financial rewards to the nurses to encourage them to involve in the trauma nursing career.
