المستخلص

The aim of this work was to study the bacterial flora of women in labor with and without PROM and to identify percentage and risk factors for neonatal sepsis following PROM.
This study was carried out on 100 neonates and their mothers.
The incidence of early onset neonatal sepsis following PROM in the present study was 25%.
The commonest organisms isolated from lower genital tract of the mothers with PROM were Klebsiella, E coli, Gardenerlla vaginalis,
**»
Ureaplasma and Mucoplasma with a significant depletion of Lactobacilli.
The increase in the number of the organisms detected from the lower genital tracts of the mothers was significantly associated with PROM.
The results of surface swabs from the neonates (throat and umbilical) born after PROM were significantly higher than the neonates without PROM as regard growth of organisms in general but there was no difference as regard growth of each organism.
Organisms isolated from blood cultures of the septic neonates (groups 2&3) were as follow : E call emerged as the most common isolated pathogen 60% in group 2 and 42.5% in group 3 followed by Klebsiella 20% in group 2 and 27.5% in group 3 and Pseudomonas 20% in group 2 and 15% in group 3 while the least common organisms were Staphylococci 7.5% in group 3, Enterobacter 5% in group 3 and Diphteriodl.5% in group 3.
