Abstract

This study has been carried out to compare the histology and fine structure of the retina of the diurnal reptiles; European chameleon (Chameleo chameleon) and gold skink (Eumeces schneiderii), with that of noctural reptiles; Egyptain gecko (Tarentola annularis), and reptiles with both nocturnal and diurnal activity; horned viper (Cerastes cerastes). The retina of these reptiles were examined by the light and electron microscope. Light microscopic examination of the retina of the four reptilian species revealed the presence of ten well-defined layers. These layers were arranged as; pigment epithelium photoreceptor layer, outer limiting membrane, outer nuclear layer, outer plexiform layer, inner nuclear layer, inner plexiform layer, ganglion cell layer, optic nerve fiber layer and inner limiting membrane. Electron microscopic examination of these retina revealed certain major differences in their fine structure.
