Abstract

Any person who is not a native speaker must necessarily be forced to rely on some imperfect competencies to solve unexpected problems that arise when communicating in a foreign or a second language over which s/he does not have full control.
Bialystok (1990) refers to the lack of foreignlsecond language knowledge as a ‘gap’. Foreign/second language learners try to fill this gap by the use of compensation strategies (CpSs here after) which have been, generally, defined as devices used to solve communication problems despite an inadequate repertoire of the linguistic code. This study aimed at investigating the presence and frequency of CpSs in the Interlanguage of Algerian majors of English. This study aimed, also, at investigating whether there exist a relationship between the proficiency level of the subjects and the strategies employed, and the task being performed and the strategies used.
For this purpose, three different tasks have been devised for data elicitation ranging from oral to written performance. The first task consists in the’ object-identification’ task where fifty participants were asked to name or describe orally objects shown to them through computer-generated pictures. The second task consists in the ‘re-tell story’ task where the same subjects (the fifty participants in the ‘objectidentification’ task) were asked to write the summary or retell the stories narrated to them by native speakers in a language laboratory. The third task consists in a self-scoring questionnaire where 116 students were asked to fill out the questionnaire (the SILL) which was used as a retrospective measure to obtain further evidence regarding Algerian
