Abstract

The introduction of duplex Doppler ultrasonography has been
an important breakthrough in the evaluation of splanchnic haemodynamics. However, the potential diagnostic value of performing Doppler measurements of liver vasculature to assess early stages of liver fibrosis has not been established.

Liver biopsy in chronic hepatitis C provides a unique source of information on assessing the grade of liver inflammation and stage of liver fibrosis. It also provides information about prognosis, urgency of treatment as well as response to therapy. However, liver biopsy is an invasive procedure and does carry a small risk for complication.

This study aimed at correlating Doppler ultrasound parameters with the grade and stage of fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C, with a view to substitute such parameters for a liver biopsy in suitable patients.

The study was conducted on 78 patients, 69 male (88.46%) and 9 female patients (11.54%) suffering from chronic hepatitis C who had elevated levels of serum transaminases, positive HCV Ab and positive HCV RNA by PCR. Their age ranged from 23 to 55 with a mean of 42.36 ± 7.20.

All patients were subjected to thorough history taking, full clinical examination and laboratory investigations in the form of complete
