Abstract Tinnitus is defined as the conscious experience of a sound that originates in the head. It affects approximately 17% of the general population (Sindhusake et al., 2003). The quality of life can be severely impaired by the psychologic effects of tinnitus on the patient and, indirectly, on the involved family. Tilmitus even may precipitate suicide in some patients (Lewis et al., 1994). We aimed in this study to estimate and compare the effect of intratympanic instillation of lignocaine (lidocaine) 2 percent in treatment of tinnitus of cochlear origin whether those cases with normal hearing threshold(The idiopathic subjective tinnitus) or those with sensorineural hearing loss due to cochlear affection. We have selected forty patients suffering from bilateral tinnitus, according to certain inclusion & exclusion criteria, and we divided them into two main groups (after filling a detailed questionnaire and, after being subjected to meticulous clinical, laboratory & audiological assessment) : Group I: 20 tinnitus cases with. normal hearing threshold (the idiopathic subjective tinnitus). Group II: 20 tinnitus cases with sensorineural hearing loss due to cochlear affection. We assessed in our study the effect of five successive weekly sessions of intratympanic 1ml lignocaine 2% instillation in suppression of tinnitus in both groups. |
