Abstract

Breast carcinoma is the most common malignant tumour and the leading cause of carcinoma death in women. Breast cancer accounts for about 300/0 of cancer deaths in women in the developed countries, and about 150/0 in the developing countries. I It is not possible to predict with certainty how a particular beast cancer will behave in a particular patient as the disease has markedly variable course, widely different clinical outcome, different response to adjuvant therapy and because breast carcinoma is common, a well integrated analysis of all known prognostic factors will be essential. In the ever widening search for such prognostic factors, a relatively recent, promising, and dependent factor have been focused on which is ”Tumour Angiogenesis”. It could be defined as the formation of new vessels from the endothelium . of the preexisting vasculature. Angiogenesis is an important and necessary step for tumour growth and that it plays an important role in facilitating metastatic dissemination. The present study was undertaken to discover if intratumour microvessel density could be quantitated on a biopsy rapidly and reproducibly, to compare angiogenesis in cases invasive ductal carcinoma, in-situ ductal carcinoma and fibroadenoma, as well as to define further the relationship of intratumour microvessel density to other reported prognostic indicators.
