We feel that this study further demonstrates that in properly screened individuals it is possible to safely combine plastic and abdominal surgery without significantly increasing operative time, blood loss, postoperative complications, or hospital stay. The benefit of this operative approach is the improved operative exposure. Wound complications will occur in these patients, but they are manageable and acceptable. It is clear that an easier procedure is a safer one for the patient. We have noted that abdominoplasty is a safe and satisfying procedure, when performed in conjunction with other intra-abdominal procedure. Patients are pleased with the outcome and have improvement in their symptoms, with minimal health risk. There is, however, a significant incidence of minor complications, mostly related to wound healing. These complications are significantly increased in patients with morbid obesity. When complications occur, they are minor and managed easily in an office setting. We have observed that obesity of the patient at the time of abdominoplasty affects the results of the surgery clearly and adversely. However, we also agree that complication rates are not equivalent to surgical failure rates, and that abdominoplasty should still be considered an applicable procedure in this patient population despite the apparently high complication rate. The vast majority of the patients with complications in all studies, including the current one, ultimately resolved their problems and obtained results that would be considered successful by both patient and surgeon.
