Abstract

Breast cancer is an important and growing health problem and ranks as the first malignancy affecting Egyptian females. It’s considered as the second cause of cancer deaths in females after lung cancer.
Tumor markers play an important role in monitoring the course of breast cancer. Their usefulness depends on the ability to identify, predict and exclude tumor growth before the changes are detected by other methods.
CEA and CA 15.3 are the most tumor markers that have been studied in relation to breast cancer. Their serum levels are related to tumor stage with significantly higher values in patients with tumor metastasis. They are useful tools in the monitoring of breast cancer patient and in the prediction of early recurrence of breast cancer.
The aim of this study is the measurement and comparison between serum CEA and CA 15.3 levels in the breast cancer patients and correlate them with the main parameter of primary tumor (size and grade), metastasis (time interval to metastasis, site and size), and also with other clinical variables.
The study included 46 patients with breast cancer classified into 3 groups. Group 1 included 15 patients with stage I and II, group II included 18 patients with stage III, group III included 13 patients with stage IV. In addition to control group included 20 apparently health with sex and age matched volunteers.
