Abstract

This study was undertaken to assess the tongue posture in the different types of malocclusion at rest position, and to show if there was a correlation between the tongue position at rest and the different Classes of malocclusion.
A sample of forty subjects (32 females and 8 males) with an age range of 16-25 years were selected for this study. The subjects were classified according to the anteroposterior relationship between maxillary and mandibular apical bases into three classes based on the ANB angle and the amount of overjet and grouped into four groups:
Group 1: Ten cases with Class I malocclusion (8 and 2 ) in which the ANB angle had a mean value of 3.3 degrees.
Group 2: Ten cases with Class II division 1 (8 and 2) in which the ANB angle had a mean value of 6.9 degrees and oveljet of mean value of 7.8 mm.
Group 3: Ten cases with Class II division 2 (8 and 2) in which the ANB angle had the same mean value of group 2 but the mean value of its overjet was 2.6mm.
Group 4: Ten cases with Class III Inalocclusion (8 and 2) in which the ANB angle had a mean value of -2.6 degrees.
For each subject enrolled in this study, standardized lateral cephalometric roentgenogram was taken after painting the tongue surface with radiopaque Barium sulphate paste to enhance the images
