Abstract

The present study was designed to determine the in-vitro susceptibility of six native strain of avian origin to ofloxacin and to other five members of commonly used quinolones . Also , the efficacy of therapeutic doses of ofloxacin(50 ppm . or 100 ppm) in chicks experimentally infected with E.coli was investigated . Special emphasis was drawn to study the side effects induced by the drug that could be reflected on some liver and kindney functions, blood picture and histopathological changes involving kidney and liver. Also the effect of the drug on body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion was investigated

(A) Antibacterial activity in-vitro:
The present study demonstrated that the MICs of novel fluoroquinolones (ofloxacin , enrofloxacin , danofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin) were much lower than that of that older quinolone(Flumequine)
Against tested avian pathogens namely, E.coli 078 , salmonella spp, Staphlococcus aureus , Streptococcus fecalis , Coryne bacterium and Pseudomonas spp.

(B) Antibacterial activity of ofloxacin in –vivo:
One hundred and eighty, one day old unsexed Hubbard broiler chicks were used in this work and they were divided into six groups , each group contain thirty chicks. Groups 4,5,6 were infected with E.coli at 1st day of age Ofloxacin was administrated at 2nd day of the age for 5 consecutive days at dose rate of 50 ppm . To groups 2,5 and at dose rate of 100 ppm . to groups 3,6 . Meanwhile, group 1 was left as control
