Abstract

Neonatal sepsis is defined as a clinical syndrome of systematic illness accompanied by bacteremia occurring in the first month of life.
Re-establishing the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory influences continues to be a logical, therapeutic goals in the treatment of sepsis. Accordingly, animals and clinical investigations preserve to identify potential immunomodulation approaches for sepsis intervention.
Pentoxyfilline (PTF), a methylxanthine inhibits endotoxin-included TNF production in virto, and blunts TNF induced cytotoxicity, and has rheologic effects, so attenuates circulatory shocks.
The aim of our study is to assess the effect of pentoxifylline as an adjunctive to antibiotic therapy in reducing morbidity and mortality in neonates with sepsis.
This study comprises 50 neonates selected from the intensive care unit of neonates of Menoufiya university hospital and these neonates were further subdivided into two groups:
* Group I: Pentoxifylline treated group as an adjunctive to traditional treatment. This group includes 25 neonates (15 males representing 60% weeks and mean weight 2.9 Kg)
* Group II: received traditional treatment only. This group includes 25 neonates (13 male representing 52% and 12 female representing 48%)with mean gestational age 34 weeks and mean weight 2.3 Kg.
