Abstract

Surveillance has been widely accepted as the first step toward reducing hospital acquired infections this intervention study was conducted as an approach to conduct a surveillance system in the general surgery department as apart of a comprehensive hospital infection control program in Menoufiya University Hospitals .
This study was divided into three phases:
First phase (pre-intervention): included situation analysis of hospital infection status .
Second phase (intervention): included development of observation checklist for evaluation of nurses’ performance regarding infection control measures ,developments of quality control tools for monitoring infection control standers in the ward and safety measures in operating rooms , and developing recording formats to be used for cases with HAIs.
Training of staff on recording the formats wad carried out in additional ,provision of training program in infection control principles to the medical staff and house keepers.
Third phase: included measurement of outcomes of the surveillance system on the prevalence of HAIs, KAP of nurses and case record .
Pre-intervention data showed that the prevalence of HAIs was 16.00% with SSIs was the most common infection control measures.
Part two of the results shows analysis of surveillance data that included : Analysis of patients’ data to get risk analysis ,evaluation of nurses’ practices and infection control standards in the word before and after training
