Abstract

This experimental study aimed to evaluate the feasability of using biodegradable bone plates and screw.s in the treatment ofmandibular fractures in comparison to titanium miniplates and screws clinically, radiographically and histologically. ’:
This study was carried out on twenty adult male mongrel dogs weighting 20- 25kgs. The animals were classified into two groups.
Group I (10 dogs) in which unilateral mandibular fracture was induced and the fixation of the fracture was done by using 6 hole, 2mm SR-PLLA plates and SR-PLLA 7mm mono cortical screws.
Group II ( 10 dogs) in which the same surgical technique of the fracture as in group I was done. However, the fixation was carried out by using 6 hole 2 mm titanium miniplates and 7 mm titanium monocortical screws.
All animals were examined clinically daily during the first post operative week then every other day during the second post operative week for edema, wound infection and healing.
’* Two animals were sacrificed from each group at interval of
2,4,12,24 and 36 weeks post-operatively and the fractured mandibles were subjected to the radiographical and histological studies.
The clinical results showed that both types of internal fixation either with self-reinforced polylactide plates or with titanium miniplates, provided efficient clinical stability and healing of the fracture.
