Abstract

A study of large eddy simulation (LES) approach as a tool for treating the turbulent flow is presented. The approach utilizes spatial mathematical filtering operation in computing large eddies numerically while modeling small eddies.
A complete review of the theory, reasons, advantages and disadvantages of LES is presented comparatively with its alternatives. A full comparative analysis of the different techniques and methods related to filtering, modeling and numerical procedure for LES are developed. This comparative analysis is essential for ensuring efficient and precise LES analysis of turbulent flow.
A subjective general computer program is developed for studying turbulent flow using LES. The developed computer model is applied for studying the motion of a liquid flow with a free surface in a broken dam model. Results of the mathematical and computer models success to simulate the known results of the concerned real application, which give the validity of using these models for handling similar applications.
An important type of LES error called the commutation error may appear through the filtering process. A definition of the commutation error is developed and used for adjusting the factors that can eliminate or control the error effect. The analysis is used for classifying filters according to their simplicity and accuracy.
