Burn injuries is one of the most public health problems facing both developing and industrialized nations today. The devastating nature of injury alters the physical and psychological elements of the survivors. Burns lead to change in body image, self esteem, disability, disfigurement and the long rehabilitation process. The purpose of this study was to validate ’the effect of a protocol of nursing care on burned patients outcomes to test achievement of purpose four hypothesis were formulated, the study group will have better wound healing as compared to the control group utilizing the wound healing monitoring progress notes. The study group who will participate in the designed protocol of care will have better body image. As compared to the control group utilizing the Baird (1991), Fuller (1994) and Heruly (1986) scale. The study group who will participate in the designed protocol of care will have higher Jalowice and powers (1981) coping scores as compared to the control group who will participate in the protocol of nursing care. The study group who will participate in the designed protocol of nursing care will have pre discharge higher knowledge scores as compared to the control group who will not participate in the protocol of nursing care. The study sample was consisted of 60 subjects equally divided randomly into the study and the control groups. The study was conducted over 8 months in the burn unit at Shebin El - Kom Teaching Hospital - subjects on both groups were pre and post tested- patient pre knowledge questionaire was used to collect the information used to assess the patient knowledge about burn and its management. Wound healing monitoring progress notes was designed to assess wound healing condition. Body image scale to identify changes in body image after burn and after exposure of the subjects to the designed protocol of nursing care. Jalowice and power (1981) coping scale to assess and monitor coping strategies utilized by subjects of the study - results documented support of the four stated hypothesis as the studied subjects documented better wound healing. The study group use affective oriented coping strategies. Improvement of the patient body image is clear on discharge. Mean knowledge scores had significantly increased among the study group subject compared to that of the control group subjects. In conclusion, the study findings pointed that enrichment of patients’ knowledge and skills about burn wound and its management seemed to have a positive impact or improvement of wound condition and body image, Recommendation replication of this study on a larger probability sample is recommended to achieve more generalizable results.
