Abstract
Allergic eye disease is a common ocular problem.
This essay aimed at throwing light at the underlying pathogenic mechanisms of allergic eye disease. Nowadays there is interest in studying the immunology of the allergic eye disease and the new modalities in treatment.
The most common allergic eye disease are :-
1- Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (Hayfever).
2- Atopic kerato-conjunctivitis (AKC).
3- Vernal kerato-conjunctivitis (VKC).
4- Giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC).
5- Contact allergies involving the eye.
6- Atopic blepharo-conjunctivitis.
7- Perennial allergic conjunctivitis.
This essay presents the clinical picture and the immunological aspects of allergic eye diseases. We threw light on allergic eye disease trying to increase our under standing of the genetics and immunological basis of allergic eye disease.
Lacrimation and itching are the main symptoms of different types of allergic eye diseases but there are other symptoms and signs which are different from one type to another.
Lids and conjunctiva are the main parts of the eye to be affected.
There are multiple factors sharing in the pathogenesis of allergic eye diseases such as increase level of IgG, histamine, esinophils, mast cells , T-lymphocyte and adhesion molecules .Allergic eye disease is most common of type I and type IV of hyper-sensitivity. The correct diagnosis of these diseases depend on the accurate history, Their symptoms signs and sometimes on the laboratory tests.
