Abstract

The objective of this work is to identify thrips species found in apple, citrus, grapes, guava and mango fields located in Kalubia Governorate, during three successive years (1999, 2000 and 2001). It also aims at studying the population dynamics of thrips in horticultural fields throughout the year and their host preference. Also, the effect of different colors, scents and traps direction on attracting thrips was investigated.
Study had handling some of the ecological effects on thrips activities and populations. In addition to identification of specimens might found in horticultural fields through the year. Five different varieties of horticultures, apple, citrus, grape, guava and mango, were selected to be the experimental fields. Three steps of study had been done. Ten different colors, violet, blue, sky-blue, green, grey, white, yellow, orange brown and red, were selected for the study.
Twenty three different species were identified during the study. Two species were recorded as new record for the Egyption fauna. The first species is Hercinothrips femoralis Reuter, which was collected from mango and citrus fields. The second was Neurothrips magnafemoralis (Hind), where it collected from apple, citrus and grapes fields. Anapfothrips obscurus (Muller), Chirothrips africanus Priesner, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, Microcephalothrips abdominalis Crawford Retithrips syriacus Mayet, Scirtothrips aurantii Faure, S. mangiferae Priesner and Thrips tabaci Lindeman were the dominant species.
Results showed many differences in colors from one host to another. Sky-blue was the most attractive color to thrips in apple, citrus and grape fields, followed by yellow and blue in apple grove, green and white in citrus orchard; while yellow and green were in grape field.
