Abstract Preeclampsia (PE) complicates 6% to 8% of all pregnancies (severe forms estimated to be about 4%), and it is a significant cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Once the diagnosis of severe PE is established, the only cure is termination of pregnancy. The medical literature supports delivery within 72 hours. However, the optimal route of delivery is arguable. Pritchard et al. (Texas Memorial Hospital) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend vaginal delivery because of the maternal benefits and the high probability of success. Others propose immediate cesarean delivery, especially if at < 30 weeks’ estimated gestational age. |
