Abstract

The synthesis of asymmetric composite and monolithic ceramic filters, with high performance quality, to be used in heavy metals separation is the aim of this study.
Asymmetric composite ceramic filter consisted of a macroporous or mesoporous substrate coated with several layers having lower pore size than the substrate usually microporous film. On the other hand, Asymmetric monolithic ceramic filter is monolithic system having dual pore size distribution. Ceramic filters synthesis was performed using polymeric sol-gel process. The optimization of synthesis parameters as well as the characterization was achieved to obtain ceramic filters with high separative properties. The synthesized ceramic filters were characterized using mercury porosimeter for pore size distribution analysis, BET method for specific surface areas measurements and BJH pore size distribution analysis, XRD analysis for crystalline phase identification and SEM for microstructure and morphology studies. The optimized ceramic filters were used in cadmium, copper, iron, manganese and lead separation. The separation coefficient measurement of the different used ceramic filters was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer technique. It was found that synthesized zirconia ceramic filter has the highest separation coefficient values with respect to the other ceramic filters. So, it can be used, under the selected conditions, in wide application of heavy metals separation with high degree of accuracy.
