Abstract
Water is the most important natural resource in the world since without it life can not exist and most industries could not operate. Surface water exposed to different somces of contamination and pollution. So, the fresh surface water as a source of drinking water must undergo many processes for purification to make it safe and appeal to consumers. Edfma water purification plant is located at end of Rosetta branch of the River Nile. It supplies three big cities in El-Beheira governorate (Edku, Rosetta and El-Mohmodia) with drinking water. Actual operation of Edfma water purification plant was started since 1996. First stage of the plant, had a design raw water capacity of 500 L/s operating 24 hours per day. There is a possibility that the plant will be extended in second stage to 750 L/s and eventually an ultimate flow rate of 1000 L/s will be realized. There are different processes for water purification in the plant. These are prechlorination, coagulation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection.The study was carried out from April 2002 to March 2003 to study the effect of water purification process in Edfma plant on the reduction of pollutants and contaminats existing in the water intake located near the end of Rosetta branch of the River Nile.
