Abstract

Laboratory histological and morphological studies were carried out on the development of the wing of both the chick (Alexandria strain) and the Japanese quail (European race) during various embryonic stages. In the chick embryos, stages 17, 19, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 41 (according to Hamburger and Hamilton, 1951) were selected for this study. In the quail embryos, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,15-days were used, For this purpose, fertilized eggs were incubated until reaching the desired stage. Subsequently, they were taken off the incubator and the embryos were fixed and washed in 70% alcohol. The majority of the fixed specimens were dehydrated, embedded in paraffin wax, sectioned and finally stained for microscopical observations. Some, however, were preserved in 70% alcohol in order to study the external morphology of the developing wings. In addition, few specimens were treated by the method of Burdi (1965) for skeletal transparency preparations.
Actually, it is possible to describe wing morphogenesis via three phenomena, namely : (1) polarity of outgrowth, (2) cell death, and (3) differentiation of muscle, cartilage and bone.
