Abstract

Currently, renal MRI still acts a complementary method addressing specific questions which have not been resolved by other diagnostic tests. However, in the future, as MRI techniques improve they may replace other conventional imaging methods.
The currnt modes of radiological imaging available to the urologist in everyday practice include plain radiography, contrast studies, fluoroscopy, ultrasonography, CT and MRI. The latest has overcome many of the perceived difficiencies associated with the other standard techniques. The main advantages of MRI are that it permits multiplanar imaging, it does not involve the use of ionizing radiation and there is no evidence to suggest that the procedure causes celluar toxicity. It is also a noninvasive procedure (apart from the injection of contrast medium) and allows greater tissue contrast that compared wih other modalities. However, the longer time required to produce an image compared with other modalities and the claustrophobic effect which the scanning chamber may have, will make it unsuitable for some patients, however, time-efficient optimizations offer a more comprehensive and efficient approach to breath- hold abdominal MRI.
