Abstract

Chlamydia cervical infection is one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease all over the world. Chlamdia trachomatis infection during pregnancy may have a role in preterm labour low birth weight and neonatal inclusion conjunctivitis.
The current study was carried out on 70 pregnant women attending Benha University and El-Galaa Teaching Hospital during the period from January 1996 to April 1996. The study group consisted of 35 pregnant females admitted with preterm labour pain with gestational age between 20-37 weeks of gestation. The control group consisted of 35 pregnant females in labour after the 37 weeks of gestation.
Chlamydia trachomatis infection was significantly increased among women with preterm labour. It was +ve in 17.1% compared to . 2.8% in control group in addition, no significant association was found between chlamydial infection and preterm premature rupture of membranes. Also, no significant association was found between chlamydial infection and maternal age, parity, gestational age at time of preterm labour.
Thus, we recommend early routine testing of the pregnant women for chlamydia trachomatis infection and early treating those found to carry the organism aiming to get rid of one of the possible causes of preterm labour and neonatal complications.
