Abstract Introdu~tiolt 1 INTRODUCTION HCMV is a DNA virus wbich beloegs to the Herpes virus family. It replicates in the nucleus of tbe cell, It is specific for bumen tissue. M in other herpes viruses, despite tbe development of a good immune response, viral shedding after a primary infection normally persists for montbs, even years, until the infection eventually becomes latent (Wolf and Sonneborn 1990). Primary HCMV infections are generally (95%) asymptomatic and thus go undetected (Stagna et al., 1982) (StlgDO et al., 19”85). HCMV infections, caused by infusion of infected blood, are rarely symptomatic in immuDologically coaipetent transfusion recipients (Bayer et al., 1’984) (Wolf and sonneborn 1990); Yet HCMV infections can cause significant morbidity and mortality in lmmunocompromised patleets. The clinical maalfestations in those patients are in the form of, pneumonitis, retinitis, encephalitis and disease of the gastrointestinal tract. HCMV prenatalrnfectioDs may cause Jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly, thrombocytopenia and microcephaly. Prenatally infected infants which are asymptomatic at birth may develope hearina defects aDd mental retardatlon (stagno ,et at, t9’8S). -----------._-- _. |
