Abstract

- 71 - Summary, conclusion and recommendation
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATION
The adverse effects caused by high levels of dietary iron on copper
metabolism come mostly from animal models. In humans, who frequently
use supplements of vitamins and iron, this interaction has not been
sufficiently studied, particularly in children. Controversial results in the
literature encouraged us to carry-out a study aiming at verifying whether
oral iron therapy would interfere with the nutritional copper status of a
group of 29 anemic children where iron deficiency anemia was prevalent. fi..JJX ~
The study design included evaluation of body indicators of copper
and iron before and after oral iron therapy.
Significant changes of body indicators of iron ( hemoglobin level,
serum iron, transferrin saturation %, serum transferrin and total iron
binding capacity) after oral iron therapy denote correction of the state of
anemia.
Serum copper and serum ceruloplasmin were found to be
significantly decreased after oral iron therapy indicating that oral iron
used in treatment of iron deficiency anemia may carry the hazard of
inducing copper deficiency.
So, we recommend that all possible efforts and funds should be
paid to prevent iron deficiency anemia and if it happens, copper
supplementation should go hand in hand with iron therapy for these
children.
