Abstract

There are various methods Involving surgical intervention, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and targeted therapy being widely used in cancer treatment. Chemotherapy is a systematic treatment using drugs that can kill cancer cells and is used as a curative or palliative treatment. However, the chemotherapeutic agents used in these drugs can also affect normal healthy cells causing many forms of side effects. So nurses who by the nature of their work, spend more time with patient when access health services are in challenge to meting the physical, emotional and psychological needs of those patients. Despite of that, little attention has yet been focused on the experiences of nurses who provide these services. With the likelihood that cancer care will continue to expand in the future, research is needed to explore the experience of nurses’ working in cancer care units.
Aim of study: This study was carried out in order to identify nurses’ level of competence in caring for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and considers how adequately this care is met.
The study was conducted at oncology departments (inpatient and outpatient) in Main University Hospital, Gamal Abdel Nasser Hospital (HIN) and Medical Research Institute. The sample comprised 60 of oncology nurses who providing direct care for cancer patient receiving chemotherapy.
Tools were used in the study:
Tool I - Chemotherapy Observation Rating scale:
This tool was developed by the researcher based on basic nursing care competencies derived from literature review. It was used to observe actual nursing care provided to cancer patient at the day of chemotherapy session; it included the following points: Patient physical assessment, patient and environment preparation, drugs administration and safety precautions, communication skills, documentation, and health teaching skills.
Tool II. Nurses’ knowledge questionnaire tool:
This questionnaire was developed by the researcher and it included structured questions to investigate nurses’ knowledge needed to care for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy; it encompassed three types of questions: (Multi choices questions, right or false, and open end questions) covering nurses’ information about cancer disease, chemotherapy principles.
- Sociodemographic data sheet attached to tool II.
The participating nurses were observed for 5 times during their actual clinical practice using the observational rating scale sheets. Each nurse was observed for period of 5-7 hours approximately during mooring shifts. Also the knowledge test was carried out for each nurse on an individual basis for 30-45 minutes during their morning shifts.
