The objectives of this study were to study, to display and to analyze: 1) Personal and household consumption patterns and distribution of their income on essential diatery and non-diatery goods and groups in rural and urban areas in ARE., 2) The structure of consumption expenditure on essential food goods and groups, 3) The influence of family size, family head’s occupation, educational status and economic activity on yearly individual and household food expenditure, and 4) Capital and real income of individual and household in rural and urban areas in Egyptian Governorates in order to identifjf the degree of distribution of family income and expenditure. The study depends on the family Budget Survey collected by Central Agency of Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMS) for 1990\199 1. Percentages, Linear and non linear regression analyses and analysis of variance procedure were used to analyze the data. The main findings of the analysis have indicate : - The size of mean family, and individual income in northern governorates is greater than in South Governorates. - The degree of concentration of family income using Gini’s coefficient was 0.78 in rural areas and 0.8 1 in urban areas. Lurance curve indicated that the income distribution according to the family size is far away fiom the optimum distribution line but this degree is higher in urban areas than that in rural areas. - The degree of concentration of family expenditure using Gini’ s coefficient was 0.65 in rural areas and 0.47 in urban areas. Using lurance curve, it was found that the expenditure distribution according to the family size is far away from the optimum distribution line but this degree is higher in rural areas than in urban areas. - The results also indicaed that the food was considered to be one of the most important expenditure groups in the total essential expenditure groups in rural areas. - The results have shown that cereals and carbohydrates were considered as one of the most important groups in food groups in rural areas, however, meat and poultries were more important in urban areas. Therefore, it could be concluded that the consumption pattern was mainly concentrated on the non-animal proteins in rural areas where it was concentrated on animal protein in urban areas. - The major expenditure groups were classified according to their expenditure elasticities. It was found that food and housing were considered as one of the necessary groups in rural and urban areas. However, the major expenditure groups were considered as Iuxury groups whereas their demand elasticity was flexible. The results have shown also that the expenditure elasticities for the most essential expenditure groups were higher in rural areas compared with that in urban areas. - The study of food goods and groups were classified according to the expenditure alasticities, and the family food expenditure functions in rural areas. It was found that beverages and soft drinks were considered as necessary goods where their demand elasticity was inelastic however cereals and carbohydrates, dry legumes, fiesh and dried vegetables, eggs, oils and fats, sugar and sugar products and other food materials have expenditure demand elesticity. However, hits, meat and poultries, fish, milk and their products have high elasticity and were considered as luxury goods.
