Abstract

This work is aimed to study the development of positive discharge on rough surfaces, especially at voltages close to the onest value. Such surfaces are characterized by discrete spots at which the discharge is localized [1]. It is worth while to understand the interaction of neighboring coronas [2] to affect the discharge modes on rough surfaces.
The interaction between positive coronas was modeled [2] using two protrusions (end of two sewing needles) attached to a smooth thick conductor (representing an HV transmission lines), thus simulating an actual rough conductor. This simulation will be referred to - in the present terminology - as the ”equivalent rough conductor”. The spacing between the protrusions is variable to investigate the development of corona on equivalent rough conductors with different surface conditions.
To formulate mathematically the interaction between neighboring corona protrusuions, two algorithms are developed. The first is aimed to calculate the corona onset voltage and the second is to calculate the also characteristics (shape, amplitude and repetition rate) of corona from each protrusion. The method of calculation is based on the postulate that the corona pulse flows through the HV circuit as corresponding to a series of successive generations of electron avslanches which develop in the ionization-zone around the protrusions [3-5]
