Privacy is one of the basic needs that should be fulfilled in house design of houses, specially in oriental societies. This is mainly to help people do their private activities without being watched or heared from outside.
The Egyptian house has greatly affected by the concept of privacy through history, specially during the Islamic era. During this stage, and according to the Islamic teachings, there was a great concern about attaining a higher degrees of privacy. Therefore, the house is designed in such a way to be inward - looking using window screen (Mashrabiya) on the outside windows. Also, the house is configured in such away to have separate; one for men and the other for women.
As a result of many social, economical, technical and orgnizational factors, the design of the Egyptian house has undergone several stages of change. Now, the house design does not adequately meet the privacy requirements of its residents. Consequently, the society is suffering many social problems.
In discussing the concept of privacy, the research has three main objectives:
1- To determine the degree of importance of privacy and its effect on house design.
2- To reach a conceptual framework that can be used in the analysis of house design according to the privacy requirements.
3- To determine the degree of privacy attained in some housing patterns in Egypt.
Through the application of the suggested analytical framework. And tp provide the necessary recommendations to improve the degree of privacy attained in these pattwens.
To reach its objectives, the research is divided into five chapters:
1- Man and the need for privacy.
It aims determing the degree of privacy needed for man. It studies the privacy concept; its importance, types, and levels.
2- Types of privacy in the Egyptian house in different historic stages.
This chapter studies the development of the Egyptian house from ancient times to the mid of the 20th century. This is to analysie and define the types and degrees of privacy acqired in each of these stages.
3- Basis of house analysis and evaluation according to privacy requirements.
This chapter studies the main factors that affect both the internal and external privacy. Also, it tries to reach a cenceptual analytical framework that can be used in evaluating house design regarding privacy.
4- An analytical study of the modern Egyptian house within privacy perspective.
In this chapter, many modern housing patterns in Egypt has been evaluated using the analytical framework presented in chapter 3.
5- A field study to determine to haow much does the Egyptian house meet the privacy requirements of its residents. Minia city is chosed for this study as one of the typical Egyptian cities.
This chaptertries, through a field study, to determine the degree of interest of Minia city people in privacy. It also tries to examine degrees of privacy attained in some typecal houses in the city.
Therefore, three govermental and cooperative residential sites has been analyised regarding layout configuration, distance between building, and internal design of housing units. This is to reach optimum architectural manipulations necessary to attain adequate privacy levels in residential sites.
