As a result of the concentration of the vast majority of the population in Egyptaround the Nile valley within an area does not exceed than 4% of the total of the country, and while the increasable population growth does not find an enough care of urban extent in the desert which equals about 96% of the total area, the population density has increased and the problems of urban growth has emerged in the Egyptian cities as a phenomenon which needs a quick solution. Thus and even, an urban settlements of none character has appeared, which does not have the minimum urban requirements, it called ”a marginal settlements”.
The purpose of the research is to classify and identify those marginal areas, seeking an actual measure to explain its properties as an urban, social and economical view by the way of an analytical study of its different manners.

The research consists of three parts:
The first part is about urban growth of the contemporary Egyptian city that siscusses the phenomena of urban bulkiness and its problems that let to marginality appearence.
So. the research tried to expose this phenomenon as a theory and suppositions.
The second part is about marginality in the Egyptian city as a general view, which is restricted in a seven types as a view of location, level and urban environment.
The third part is an analytical study of the marginal urban areas in Assiut city by the way of field studies which discusses and compares between the marginal types founded in the city.
The research ends of some important recommendations as a contrivance from the study.
