Computers have many roles to play in architectural education, and for that reason architecture schools all over the world have started to integrate computing in their courses. This trend was developed on the bases of continuous research to study the most suitable means to adopt computing in architectural education.
Initial observations show that the Egyptian universities stand far behind international standards in this regard. Although there are individual efforts to accomplish the required development, these are short-handed by many difficulties, which are mainly:
- Absence of, or obscure, policies in most Egyptian universities towards integrating computing in architectural education; and
- Lack of sufficient basic requirements needed to develop a system of computer education in architecture such as hardware, software, suitable environments, qualified personnel (teachers and students), sufficient references, etc.
The current challenge facing Egyptian universities is to integrate computing in their curriculums, to enhance computer knowledge and experiences among staff and students, to renew and upgrade the currently available hardware and software, and to enhance the environment in which the teaching process takes place. All these tasks can not be done before an accurate assessment of the current state of the use of computers in architectural education in the Egyptian universities is performed. Therefore; the main goal of this research is to initiate such an assessment. Further objectives of the research may be stated as follows:
1- Developing assessment measures based on:
* Studying the role of computers in architectural education.
* Analyzing individual components of the system of computer education in architecture.
* Learning from the experience of other international schools of architecture.
* Analyzing the experience of some national experts in this field and learning from their assessment of the current state.
2- Analysis and assessment of the current state and future demands from the point of view of the Egyptian schools of architecture based on the above measures.
3- Briefing the assessment results, highlighting some of the important problems, and also suggesting some directions towards solutions.
The study consists of two parts: ’Part One’ which represents the theoretical background, and ’Part Two’ which represents the analytical study. ’Part one’ is divided into three chapters:
’Chapter One’ briefs the historical development in computer hardware and software and their use in architecture and planning. ’Chapter Two’ provides an overview of the role of computers in architectural education. ’Chapter Three’ explain the components of the system of computer education in architecture. ’Part two’ is divided into two chapters: ’chapter Four’ illustrates some lessons of experience concerning the use of computers in architectural education in some foreign universities in highly developed countries. ’Chapter Five’ analyses the important aspects and characteristics of the use of computers in architectural education in the Egyptian universities.
The study ends with a conclusion in which important problems facing the use of computers in architectural education are clarified, and some directions towards solutions are highlighted.
