Abstract

The present study was conducted at the Agriculture Faculty, Saba Basha, Alexandria University, to study the effect of nitrogenous fertilization and sulphur application on the growth and chemical composition of Jerusalem artichoke plants under the alkaline soil conditions.ExperimentField experiment was carried out at the Experimental Station, Faculty of agriculture, Saba Basha, Alexandria University during the year 2004 (May-December). A three factor experiment was conducted in a split-split design with three replications. Sulphur rates were applied to the main plots, nitrogen levels were assigned to the sub plots and the three sources of nitrogen fertilizers were assigned randomly to, the sub-sub plot. The area of the sub-plot was 10.50 m2 (3.5 m length x 3 m width), with 4 ridges 75 cm apart and 50 cm between hills. The experiment included 48 treatments which were the combination of four levels of sulphur application, four levels of nitrogen application and three forms of nitrogen fertilizer. Jerusalem artichoke variety local were sown on 5th May 2004. Four sulphur rates (50, 100 and 150 kg/fed.) besides the control treatment (without sulphur application) were applied in a single dose before sowing. Four nitrogen fertilizer levels (40, 80 and 120 kg N/fed.) besides the control treatment (without fertilizers application) and three sources of nitrogen fertilizers, were as follows.
